Tendon Injuries Flashcards
What does a tendon connect with?
Muscle and bone
What cells mainly make up a tendon?
Tenocytes and collagen type 1 fibres
What are the collagen bundles in tendons covered by?
Endotendon
What are fascicles in a tendon covered by?
Paratendon
What is the whole tendon surounded by?
Epitenon
In what layer of the tendon covering do you find blood vessels?
Paratendon
How are tendons attached to tendon sheath?
By vincula
What are tendon sheaths
Thickenings which form strong annular pulleys
Types of injury that can happen to the tendon?
Degeneration, Inflammation, Enthesiopathy, Traction apophysitis, Tear, Laceration, Crush, Nodules
Inflammation of tendon presentation?
Swollen, Tender, Hot, Red, Positive finklestein’s test
What is enthesiopathy?
Inflammation at insertion to bone
An example of traction apophysitis injury to tendon?
Osgood Schlatter’s disease
Avulsion and bone fragment damage to tendon presentation?
Mallet finger- forced flexion of extended finger
Treatment of avulsion of finger?
Retraction tendon,
Reattachment of tendon,
Fixation of bone fragment
What is a intrasubstance rupture of tendon caused by?
Pushing off with weight bearing forefoot whilst extending knee,
Unexpected dorsiflexion of ankle (eg falling into hole)
Violent dorsiflexion of plantar flexed foot (eg fall from height)
