Q

Describe the first stage of team formation?

A
  1. Forming- highly dependant on the leader for guidance
Members start to get to know each other
Very little agreement on aims (fun/ competition)
    Individual roles are unclear
    Team leader must be clear
Team leader must give strong direction

Q

Describe the second stage of team formation?

A
  1. Storming- group decisions are difficult, team members jostle for positions
Members might challenge the leader- POWER STRUGGLES
Clearer focus for team and stronger sense of purpose but still uncertainties
    Cliques may form
    A need for compromise
Strong leader still needed to guide the team

Q

What are potential fault processes in Steiner’s model?

A
  1. Co-ordination problems- If timing of team members don’t match, team strategies will suffer and performance
eg: time of doubles diving out of sync
  2. Motivational Problems- if individuals are not motivated to the same extent or have different motives “Pulling in different directions”
eg: one performer shooter in the netball squad is less motivated than another and they don’t get the goal in.

Q

What did his experiment consist of/ show?

A

He found in a group pulling task, groups pulled with more force than individual, but not as much individually
eg: 8 people only pulled as hard as 4
eg; a Rugby scrum

Performance decreased due to many motivational problems, this is because they believe others will COMPENSATE for them.
