Social Facilitation/ Inhibition Flashcards
Who discovered social facilitation?
Norman Triplett
Define social facilitation?
When the presence of others watching (watching or competing) AIDS performance.
Define social inhibition?
When the presence of others (watching or competing) inhibits and hinders performance.
What were Zajonc’s findings? (Phycologist associated with the drive theory)
- The prescience of an audience increases the arousal level of a performer
- This increases the likelihood of the dominant response (Drive Theory)
- If dominant response is likely to be correct (EXPERT) then SOCIAL FACILITATION takes place
- If dominant response is likely to be correct (BEGGINER) then social inhibition takes place
How do you apply the inverted U- Theory to social F/I?
Factors that affect the inverted U theory also affect it.
- Personality- INTROVERT/EXTROVERT
- Skill Classification- Gross, Fine, Simple, Complex
- Skill Level - BEGGINER/ EXPERT
Social Facilitation Factors? -high arousal
Extroverts
Experts
Simple
Gross
Social Inhibition Factors? -high arousal

That’s Toms Hat, Relationship Probably Evaluates
The Nature of the audience The crowds knowledge Home field Advantage Relationship with crowd Proximity effect Evaluation Apprehension
Physical/ Somatic Relaxation Techniques- to minimise social inhibition?
- Progressive Muscular Relaxation
- Biofeedback- heartrate, blood pressure, respiration rates= encourages athlete do deal with stress more effectively
- Breathing control and imagery within it- imagine a calm and relaxed body.
Cognitive Stress- Management Techniques- to minimise social inhibition?
Goal Setting- make coping in front of an audience the goal Mental Rehearsal and Imagery Positive self-talk Negative Thought Stopping External and Internal Imagery
Other techniques to minimise social inhibition?
Grooving and overlearning skills
Practicing in front of an audience
Walk away and distance yourself from the audience.
