How communities and their people affected the development of sport.
Working Class sports?
Mob Football- working class/ free for all. Violent and Cruel. Played in villages. Simple Unwritten rules.
Prize fighting- violent games against each other.
Cheese roalling- would win the cheese as a prize within local village.

Upper Class sports?
Real Tennis- sophistacated with many written rules. Alot of rules and regulations. Expensive equpment. Very complcated indoors.
Cock Fighting- two animals against each other. HIGH AMOUTS OF WAGERING AND GAMBILING.

- Specalist facilities and expensive equipment.
Both upper and lower class sports?
Pedestrianism- rich families would have footmen race against each other. Cricket- both uppper and lower class, played mainly by males but females were allowed exeptions. PROFESSIONALS= lower class, were paid by upperclass to play for team. AMATEURS= upper class who played for enjoyment. Upperclass saw getting paid for playiong vulgar.
Gender affecting partcipation PRE 1850?
Women were seen as the "weaker" sex. Would do less damanding sports. Upperclass women could do archery. Lowerclass women would do "smock" races.
Law and Order affecting participation PRE 1850?
Cruel, harsh times.
Little law and order.
Lowerclasses were the most extreme violent within their sports.
Education affecting participtaion PRE 1850?
Upperclass= EDUCATED= written and complex rules, deniying the lowerclass of playing their sports.
Lowerclass= UNEDUACTED= verbal and simple rules, illitaracy was widespread.
Avaliablity of Time and Money affecting participation PRE 1850?
Lower classes= long hours and little pay.
Little opportunity for sport ( festivals and bank holidays)
Upperclass = rich land owners that didn’t need to work.
Lots of time for sport and could quickly move (fox hunting)
Transport affecting participation PRE 1850?
Main transport is horse drawn carrage.
Poor and very few roads
Only upperclasses could afford this.
Activities within local villages for local class as they had to walk.
