UC still fixed on amateur ideals eg: golf, rugby union.
Both UC AND MC have lots of time and money.

LC= professionalism, small amounts of money in football and rugby league.
Sport was an important part of troop morale in WW1 and spectatorship increased after war.
BUT LC generally couldn’t afford to spectate in purpose built stadia.

Cruel and violent sports had gone, however hunting and shooting was still there -UC/MC
Fixed numbers, time limits, boundaries. Media coverage leads to an increased need for fair play.
Helped take away the horrors of WW1 AND WW2
Spectator levels increase and INITIALLY sport was seen as respectable and a symbol of good nature, BUT a big rise in “HOLLIGANISM” towards the end of the 20th Century LC+FOOTBALL =HOOLIGANISM

Focused on “Physical developments of the community” and didn’t just focus on academic needs.

Male dominated sports and spectating
They were expected to do traditional roles as a housewife and mother. Seen as the “weaker sex” as sports were too masculine= little media coverage.
Some sports acceptable- gymnastics, tennis, athletics

Still massively affects participation
LC- earning more money but still hard/long hours so play in professional sports eg: football, rugby league.

UC/MC- amateur ideals- more disposable income.

Gradual increase in leisure time for all. More time to spectate AND participate.
UC still have more time.

Sporting places and purpose built stadia increased considerably over the century eg: leisure centres.

Increased in RAIL transport, busses and -towards the end of the century- CAR OWNERSHIP= increased participation.
Towards the end= aeroplanes= INTERNATIONAL uc/mc
Media grew- TV= 1960’s onwards
