mental health - have taken some steps but not completely there yet; need to increase resources and education
Mental health come to the front with
isolation with kids not having socialization
Culture -
simple things like eye contact - here value eye contact but many cultures not make eye contact: need keep in mind that culture has big impact in how people react to things
Try to say nonjudgmental and no biases -
all judge and biases - need be aware of those - aware how react to things; how feeling and biases and assumptions and walk into clients room/home the client and/or family very perceptive of that and pick up on that
Not point a lot people discuss
mental health and if needed help; not hesitate if physical thing - sometimes if really personal
DSM-5
Imp for diagnosing illnesses
Be genuine and respectful -
very imp; if genuine and respective, forgive crazy things say if feel genuine and respectful place from heart
Not much power to make people feel certain emotions -
is a choice we personally make as rxn that person said/did; chose to get angry by what said/did - focus becomes back on you and responsibility on you rather than lashing out on them; place responsibility on individual - what going on with you, what created that rxn in you
Listening -
imp key point to therapeutic communication and any type of communication - very hard do; sit there and listen; not say anything and allowed them talk through some things
Nontherapeutic technique -
why questions - not most therapeutic; seem like putting blame on them; tends to bring up defenses
Milieu -
goal is total environment is therapeutic; everyone is a part of this and therapeutic environment; they can touch indivs in + way and part of therapeutic atmosphere
Empathy -
getting on their level to help them and be with them to understand; get so much more with empathy and let them respond
Sympathy -
“at least”; feel discounted, not imp, not heard; deflect it
Therapeutic responses -
how respond; make statement and stop talking and let respond
Feeling safe -
communication
Nonverbal such strong communication -
often outways verbal communication
Excessive questioning -
not therapeutic; not listening/responding to indivs
Self-awareness -
importance of having this: often makes air seem safer and not so much judgment; all have biases and assumptions - how impact us as we relate to other people and do they interfere with relationships with others
Transference -
patient relates to HCP because you remind them of somebody else/someone related to them; can be +/-; can be + but can be prob if -; pat reacts to you in that way because remind them of that person
Countertransference -
patient reminds HCP as somebody else/someone related to them; have emotional rxn to them; +/-; can impact relationships - imp for self-awareness at this point
Social relationship
with friends, fam and talking about what happened in day
therapeutic relationship
how can we relate to them on this therapeutic relationship
Self-disclosure -
disclosing personal experience or information; situational (depends on relationship); keep most stuff to self unless assisting pat; not give personal info but if pat going through something and had experience but if helps pat and not own therapy to help yourself but if can help pat then self-disclosure can be helpful
