Ch 6 Flashcards
Healthy communities
Complex communities receive many varied stimuli
Community’s ability to respond effectively to changing dynamics and meet needs of members indicates productive functioning
Examine community’s functions and subsys provides clues to existing and potential health probs
Movements urge members and leaders to bring + health changes in local environments; involving many cities around nation and world, models stress interconnectedness
Each community and aggregate has a unique perspective on critical health qualities
Work with the community to develop effective solutions that are acceptable to residents
Assessing community: sources of data
Understand nature by traveling through the area
Establish certain hypotheses about health, strengths, hunches, potential health probs through shoe leather epidemiology - support with concrete data
Windshield survey - driving/walking through an area and making organized observations: layout, services, concerns; observe people
Imp analyze demographic and statistical data to provide descriptive info about the pop
Epidemiology: involves analysis of health data to discover patterns of health and illness; nature health probs and identify aggreagates at increased risk
Census data
Vital stats
Other sources
Census data (Assessing community: sources of data)
Q10y
Tabulates demographic variables: pop size and distribution
Community survey - every year - occupation and income
Provide clues to community’s potential vulnerabilities/health risks; identify trends overtime can modify programs to meed changing needs
Vital stats (Assessing community: sources of data)
Births, deaths, marriages, divorces, adoptions State health dept Provide info about pop growth/reduc Certificates with deaths about cause Birth certificates with info
Other sources (Assessing community: sources of data)
NCHS - describe health trends in national sample; reports prevalence disability, illness, health-related variables
Diagnosing health probs
Synthesizing assessment data - nurse plans examine data and creates list all actual and potential probs; then develop diagnostic statements about community’s health
Specify nature and cause of actual/potential health prob and direct community nurses’ to solve prob
4 components: identification of health prob/risk (synthesis of all data), affected aggregated/community, etiological/causal statement, evidence/support for diagnosis
