Troost wall - not racist but is divided between blacks and whites; not feel racist is saying are set up in way that still not erased; Structural racism refers to the totality of ways in which societies foster racial discrimination through mutually reinforcing systems of housing, education, employment, earnings, benefits, credit, media, health care and criminal justice.
Structural racism
umbrella term describing impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions; ADA of 1990 and rehab act of 1973 defines disability as how it limits carrying out major life activities such as ability breathe, walk, see, hear, speak, work, care for oneself, perform manual tasks, learn; affect regardless of who they are
definition/Measurability: may be objective and measurable depending on what talking about it since is umbrella term
Disability
a problem/impairment in body function or structure
A disability resulting from an impairment involves a restriction or an inability to perform an activity in a normal manner or within the normal range resulting from a loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function
Activity limitation – a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action
More specific
Definition: phys deviation from normal structure, func, phys organization, or development
Measurability: objective and measurable - see and measure it
Impairment
a disadvantage resulting from an impairment or a disability that prevents fulfillment of an expected role; More specific
definition/Measurability: not objective/measurable; is an experience related to responses of others - more related to responses of others
Handicap -
Physical disabilities
Sensory disabilities (deaf or blind)
Intellectual disabilities (preferred terminology for mental retardation)
Serious emotional disabilities/disturbances
Learning disabilities
Significant chemical and environmental sensitivities
Health problems (asthma, diabetes)
Development disabilities
EX of diff disabilities - limit one major disability
encompass those conditions that are manifested by limitation before the legal age of adulthood, which is 18; includes issues that limit or present challenges to the performance of activities of daily living (ADLs)
Encompass conditions that are chronic in nature and incorporate either/both intellectual and phys disabilities
Often result of maternal illness/infection, genetic disorders, trauma
EX: fetal alcohol syndrome, spina bifida, down syndrome, cerebal palsy
