Discuss Social Identity Theory
Year
1971
Aim
Investigate if intergroup discrimination would take place based on being put into different groups.
Sample
48 boys
14-15 years old
Procedure
- Asked to rate 12 paintings.
- Randomly allocated to 2 groups
- Told that they were split based on which artist they preferred
- Each boy had to award points to one boy from his group and one boy from other group
- Two point systems used
- First point system: Sum of points given to boys had to equal 15
- Second point system: High number of points to their team, higher number for other team. Mid range number for their team, same number for other team. Low number for their team, only one point for other team.
Results and Conclusion
First point system
- generally awarded more points to their in-group
Second point system
- Willing to award their team less points to maximize difference in points between groups
Shows that members of a group favour in-group. Intergroup conflict is not needed for discrimination to occur. Example of minimal group paradigm.
