Year

Aim
Study the impact of television on children’s aggressive behavior.
Sample
120 children in town called Notel
Procedure
Longitudal naturalistic experiment
- 3 small towns, British Columbia, Canada
- TV introduced to Notel in 1973
- Two other communities used as control. Already had access to TV, but gained access to same channel as Notel at same time
- Psychologists observed behavior of children on playground in 1973, and in 1975 2 years after to see if there was any difference
- teacher and parent ratings of aggressive behavior
- television viewing habits obtained
Results and Conclusion
- Aggressive behavior in children of Notel increased significantly from 1973 to 1975
- Aggressive behavior in children in other two towns did not increase significantly
- Males were more physically aggressive than females
Children may develop aggressive behavior by watching television.
Evaluation
Ecological Validity: High
- Natural setting
Internal Validity: low
- many uncontrolled variables
- hard to determine cause and effect relationship
Researcher Triangulation
- Many observers compared results
Data triangulation
- Data obtained from parents and teachers as well as researchers
Reliability
- Since natural experiment, not easy to replicate
