Culture
Shared behaviors, beliefs, and values that characterize a group and its members
Enculturation
The process of adopting or internalizing schemas of your own structure.
Acculturation (and 4 points of it)
When adopts the norms and behaviors of a culture that they come in contact with.
SEPARATION: maintains their own culture and minimize contact with the new culture,
ASSIMILATION: abandons their original culture and adopts the cultural behaviors and values of
their new culture.
INTEGRATION: interest in adopting the behaviors and values of the new culture, while still maintaining the original culture
MARGINALIZATION: not possible to assimilate into the new culture.
Etic approach
Cross cultural research approach that focuses the research based on the specific culture, emphasizing context specific meaning.
Emic approach
Cross cultural research approach that analyzes behavior from the perspective of one culture, using universal concepts.
Cultural dimensions
Describes the behavioral trends of a culture.
Gender schema
Cognitive framework that organizes information about gender roles based on cultural norms.
Socialization
The process through which individuals learn and adopt the behaviors, values, and norms of their culture or society
