Yearo
2010
Aim
Investigate variables that may predict acculturative stress in Asian immigrants and Asian Americans.
Sample
2095 Asian Americans
Either first generation immigrants or born to first generation immigrants
Procedure
- Semi structured interview either over internet or face-to-face.
- Interviewers had cultural and linguistic background similar to sample population.
- Random participants selected to validate data from interviews
Interviews measured
- level of acculturative stress
- impact of language proficiency, language preference, discrimination, social networks, family cohesion, socioeconomic status on acculturative stress
Results and Conclusion
70% of participants had high acculturative stress
- bilingual language preference, sharing similar beliefs and values as family, and satisfaction with socioeconomic status contributed to lowering acculturative stress
- English only preference and negative treatment by others predictors of high acculturative stress
Acculturating to new culture while still being connected with original culture contributes to lowering acculturative stress
Evaluation
Semi structured interview
- Allows for follow up questions, deeper understanding
- Reduces risk of participant misunderstanding question
BUT
- time consuming
- costly
- risk of interviewer effects
Construct validity
- acculturative stress and level of acculturation measured subjectively
- Ex: level of economic satisfaction reported by one person may not be equivalent to same level reported by another
Population validity
- large sample
- diverse (Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, etc.)
