How does wicking work?
These disintegrants are long fibrous materials which pull water in loosening inter-particle bonding. Disintegrant particles overlap passing water from one another
How’s does deformation and repulsion occur?
Deformation- particles swell to pre impression size and break up matrix
Repulsion- water drawn into pores and particle repel due to electrical forces
What is swelling?
Disintegrant particles in tablet absorb water and swell, this causes stress which spreads through matrix and break it from within
What mechanism of disintegration does starch and microcrystalline cellulose use?
Starch - deformation and swelling
M. Cellulose- wicking

Sodium starch glycollate- extensive swelling
