T3 Lesson 11 - Transcription and translation Flashcards
DNA
molecule that controls who you are - it is a nucleic acid
Genome
The entire DNA of an organism
gene
Section of the DNA molecule that codes for a specific protein
Nucleus
Holds DNA that is wrapped into chromosomes
DNA structure
- 2 strands joined in a twisted ladder called a double helix
- 4 DNA bases - adenine, thymine, guanine & cytosine
- Each step of the ladder has a pair of DNA bases - Adenine & Thymine (AT) -Guanine & Cytosine (CG)
What is RNA
- nucleic acid
- it is single stranded
- has 4 strands - Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Uracil
What is the difference between DNA and RNA?
RNA is single stranded
The Thymine strand is replaced with the Uracil strand
Number of chromosomes in a human body cell
46 - 2 of each (23 pairs)
what is a deploid cell?
a cell that contains 46 chromosomes
Base pairings in DNA?
(A-T) Adenine to Thymine,
(G-C) Guanine to cytosine
Number of chromosomes in gamete (also known as a haploid cell)
23
we get 23 from each parent which then makes 46 chromosomes altogether (Deploid)
Number of chromosomes in gamete?
