Synthetic and Naturally occurring polymers-PAPER2 Flashcards
What is addition polymerisation?
Takes place when a molecule gets added across the double bond of another, (the double bond opens up and is replaced by another molecule.)
What is condensation polymerisation?
Monomers reacting together to form the polymer and sometimes a small molecule such as water.
What are the differences between condensation and addition polymerisation?
Addition- all the monomers contain a carbon to carbon double bond (unsaturated). The only product of the reaction is the polymer unlike condensation
Condensation- Monomers can be saturated and contain no carbon to carbon double bond. As well as the polymer a small molecule such as water or hydrogen chloride is also formed.
