Q

How do you complete, Paper Chromatography?

A

1) Draw a line near the bottom of the filter paper in pencil as its insoluble so won’t dissolve in the solvent.
2) Add a spot of ink to the line and place the sheet in a beaker of solvent e.g water.
3) Make sure the ink isn’t touching the solvent or it may dissolve.
4) Put a lid on it to prevent evaporation
5) The solvent seeps up the paper carrying the ink with it, each different dye in the ink will move up the paper at a different rate so they will seperate.
6) Any dye left on the baseline show that it is insoluble.
7) When the solvent has nearly reached the top of the paper take it out and leave it to dry. The end result of spots is called a Chromatogram.

A

(Year 10 miss grey ice cream tub and upside down measuring cylinder)
Fill up the measuring cylinder with water
Tip the measuring cylinder upside down in the water bath
Place tube (connected to test tube) into water.
Add 3g of substance and acid into test tube
time for 1 min
calc the change in water (displaced)
