Chemical Changes-Paper 1 Flashcards
What are titrations used for?
Calculating concentrations
Name safety precautions for titrations
Pour acid BELOW EYE LEVEL
and wear safety goggles
How do you increase the accuracy of your titration?
You must have several consistent readings, firstly doing a rough one to get an idea where the solution changes colour.
acid + base —-> ???
Acid + Base ——> Salt + water
oxides and hydroxides are bases
Why shouldn’t you use universal indicator in titration calculations?
As it gives an estimate pH, not an accurate one.
Instead use litmus, methyl orange or phenolphthalein.
What colours does litmus go?
Acid= red
Alkali=Blue
What colours does phenolphthalein go?
Acid=colourless
Alkaline= pink
What colours does methyl orange go?
Acid= red Alkaline= Yellow
metal + acid —–> ??????
salt + hydrogen
metal + water —–> ???????
metal + water —–> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
In a displacement reaction what happens to the metal ion?
Reduced
In a displacement reaction what happens to the metal atom
oxidised
Why can’t ionic solids be electrolysed?
As the ions are in fixed positions so can’t move.
EQUATION FOR VOLUME OF GAS
MASS OF GAS/ Mr of gas X24
