Metals And Non Metals-Paper 1 Flashcards
What are metals?
Elements that can form positive ions when they react.
Most elements in the periodic table are?
Metals
Non-metals don’t generally…
Form positive ions when they react.
Why do atoms generally react?
To form a full outer shell?
How do atoms form a full outer shell?
By losing, gaining or sharing electrons
Why do elements with lots of shells have a weaker attraction?
As they are further from the nucleus.
Why do metals on the left of the periodic table mean that not much energy is needed to remove electrons?
As they don’t have many electrons to remove.
Why is forming positive ions difficult for non-metals?
They have lots of electrons to remove to get a full outer shell. Or they are close the the nucleus so feel a strong attraction. It’s much easier to share/gain electrons to get their full outer shell (negative ion)
What type of bonding to all metals have and what does it mean about their properties?
Metallic bonding which causes them to have similar basic physical properties.
What are basic properties of metals?
Strong but can be bent (malleable)
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Have high melting and boiling points.
What are some properties of a simple covalently bonded element?
Breaks into many pieces
Easily melts and boils
Doesn’t conduct electricity when solid or liquid.
Why may a substance become thinner when a large force is applied?
As the layers of atoms can slide over each other.
What are properties of non-metals?
Poor electrical conductors
Brittle solids
Poor conductors of heat
Wide variety of reactivity
