Syncope Flashcards
syncope
a neurologic condition characterized by the sudden, temporary loss of consciousness caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain, with recovery of consciousness almost immediately on becoming supine
causes of syncope
cardiovascular, hypovolemia, non-cardiovascular, idiopathic
cardiovascular
arrhythmias or mechanical problems - heart rate too fast or slow, abnormally functioning heart valve, may trigger hypoxia in the brain and subsequent fainting
hypovolemia
decrease in body fluid volume - syncope in patient’s when moved from a seated or supine position to a standing position (orthostatic or positional syncope)
non-cardiovascular
metabolic, neurologic, or psychiatric conditions - hypoglycemia, TIA, or anxiety attack can cause syncope
