Nervous System Disorders Flashcards
reticular activating system (RAS)
response system to stimuli
autonomic nervous system (ANS)
maintains cerebral homeostasis and regulates and coordinates the body’s vital functions - blood pressure, temperature regulation, respiration, and metabolism / can be affected by emotional influences - blushing, palpitations, clammy hands, dry mouth
peripheral nervous system disorders
malfunction or damage of the peripheral nerves; can affect muscle activity, sensation, reflexes, or internal organ function
mononeuropathy
disorders that involve a single nerve / caused by localized conditions - trauma, compression, infections
polyneuropathy
disorders that involve multiple nerves / characterized by demyelination or degeneration of peripheral nerves / leads to sensory, motor, or mixed sensorimotor deficits
Guillan-Barre’
example of polyneuropathy / characterized by rapidly worsening muscle weakness of the limbs that may lead to paralysis
Diabetes
major causes of peripheral neuropathy / may affect distal nerves of the hands and feet
ANS disorders
frequently result of another condition / most conditions that affect the integrity of an individual are accompanied by some changes in autonomic nervous system functioning
