What are the clinical signs of swine influenza?
INCUBATION 48 hrs & can spread to whole herd in 1-3 days (Kahn 2010)
Acute- pneumonia, gastrointestinal, normally 2ndary bacterial inf.
Chronic- labored breathing and coughing
What is swine influenza?
Is is a respiratory disease (CDC, 2012) that can be spread by air droplets or direct contact (Kahn 2010). Generally the disease is more active in the winter as the the pigs are in closer contact and generally there is less ventilation.
It also occurs more in pigs older than 12 wks.
What treatment is used for swine influenza?
None as normally recover on own.
If 2ndary bac. inf. then Ab’s are used. (IV/IM individual, or if whole herd= medicated water)
How can you prevent swine influenza?
Vaccination Good heard management -Reduce stress -Avoid over crowding -Ensure good ventilation -Clean environment
