What risk factors are assocaited with claf pneumonia?

A

Stress of the calf- moving/ transport, mixing calves
Housing- ventilation, environment, heat
Nutrition- good/ poor
If already have a decreased immune system

Risf factors are normally more so envuronmental (AHDB, 2012)

A
Decreased appetite
Nasal discharge
Increased rep. rate
Pyrexia
Hypoxia
In PM red lung= inflam; greay ling= hypoxic and damaged.

What can be used to treat calf pneumonia?

A

Ab for 2ndary bacterial infec.
Correct Ab for the identified cause
Anti-inflam drugs
Generally good management of the calf

How can you prevent calf pneumonia?

A

Ensure adequate colostrum intake to ensure IS is good
Ensure good general health (reduce stress, avoid mixing calves etc)
Vaccinate
Disease management on the farm
Good environmental conditions- housing, ventilation etc
