What does SCID stand for?
Severe combined immunodeficiency
What is SCID?
An inheritable disorder that prevents the maturation of B and T lymphocyte cells.
It mainly occurs in arabs (Scott et al, 1999)
When do signs start to show?
Generally foals appear normal at birth, and the first sign of the disorder can be seen withing 2 days of birth. Foals at birth already have a lowered IS, therefore with SCID it generally doesn’t develop further.
How would you diagnose SCID?
- Blood lymphocyte tests
- Hb & Ig counts
- Hypolasia of lymph nodes PM (normally see thay are under developed)
What symptoms do you see with SCID?
Generally you see generic symptoms
- Jaundice
- Increased HR
- Fever
- Diarrhoea
How do you treat SCID?
Bacterial Ab’s
Bone marrow transplants
Blood transfusions
What is the prognosis with SCID?
Always fatal- 100% mortality and usually die by 5 months of age (McClure 1997)
Euthanism is usually recommend as they dont/ cant survive.
