What symptoms are associated with FeLV?
Symptoms are varied but include: Anaemia Reaccuring viral/ bacterial inf. Icterus Pantocytopenia Decreased appetite Weight loss Diarrhoea Bleeding (delayed clotting) Easily bruised
How is FeLV/ Leukemia diagnosed?
Blood tests (ELISA/IFA) to look at:
Morphology of lymphocytes
CBC- normally see increased lymp. numbers
Look at ratios (gen less RBC’s)
How can you prevent FeLV?
Vaccination- but doesnt give 100%
Restrict cats activity outdoors (doesnt survive long in environment (Little 2006))
How do you treat FeLV?
Virgagen Omega (interferon based drug)
Corticosteroids, but not generally effective
How is FeLV contracted?
Through bodily fluids (spayed/ neutered less at risk) (Little 2006)
