A

Brachyspira hyodsysenteriae

How is Swine Dysentery contracted?

A

Ingestion of infected/ contaminated faeces. Bacterial shed in faeces, this can be picked up on machinery, feet, vehicles and passed easily to other farms.

What symptoms are seen with Swine Dysentery?

A
  • Diarrhoea
  • Lesion of LI/ stomach
  • Decreased appetite
  • Decreased body condition
  • Sudden death

How can you diagnose Swine Dysentery?

A
  • History of herd
  • PM
  • Faecal smears
  • Isolation of Bi

How is Swine Dysentery treated?

A
  • Ab in water for 7 days—> Lincomycin
  • If severely infected individual, inject for 4 days
  • In-feed medication

How do you prevent Swine Dysentery?

A

-Biosecurity measures
-Good management
-Be hygienic
(Phenol disinfectant, footbaths in/out farms, clean off boots etc before entering areas where pigs are found)
If weaning pigs, put Ab’s in water for 7 days.
