What is Swine Dysentery?
A common disease that effects the large intestine (also stomach sometimes) (Kahn 2010).
What causes Swine Dysentery?
Brachyspira hyodsysenteriae
How is Swine Dysentery contracted?
Ingestion of infected/ contaminated faeces. Bacterial shed in faeces, this can be picked up on machinery, feet, vehicles and passed easily to other farms.
What symptoms are seen with Swine Dysentery?
- Diarrhoea
- Lesion of LI/ stomach
- Decreased appetite
- Decreased body condition
- Sudden death
How can you diagnose Swine Dysentery?
- History of herd
- PM
- Faecal smears
- Isolation of Bi
How is Swine Dysentery treated?
- Ab in water for 7 days—> Lincomycin
- If severely infected individual, inject for 4 days
- In-feed medication
How do you prevent Swine Dysentery?
-Biosecurity measures
-Good management
-Be hygienic
(Phenol disinfectant, footbaths in/out farms, clean off boots etc before entering areas where pigs are found)
If weaning pigs, put Ab’s in water for 7 days.
