surgical definitions Flashcards
hernia
abnormal protrusion of the contents of a cavity through the wall that normally contains it
fistula
abnormal connection between two epithelial lined surfaces such as two hollow organs or between a hollow organ and the exterior.
sinus
blind ended tract between an epithelial surface and a cavity lined with granulation tissue
stoma
artificial opening of an internal tube that has been brought to the surface.
reducible hernia
abnormal protrusion of the contents of a cavity through the wall that normally contains it, that is able to be pushed back through the cavity.
irreducible hernia
is a hernia that cannot be manually pushed back into place
incarcerated hernia
irreducible hernia stuck in an abnormal position because of either adhesions between the hernial sac and the surrounding structures or adhesions between the structures within the sac.
obstructed hernia
irreducible hernia where the neck of the hernia provides an obstruction to the passage of flow through the bowel, but the blood supply is intact
strangulated hernia
this is a irreducible hernia where the bowel becomes so constricted in the neck of the hernial sac that the blood supply is compromised.
herniotomy
The surgical excision of the hernial sac
herniorrhaphy
the surgical repair of a hernia using locally available tissues
hernioplasty
involves the repair of a hernia using synthetic material like mesh.
What is endoscopy?
It is a investigational procedure that allows visual assessment, biopsy and histological review with the option for therapeutic intervention
What is barium swallow?
minimally invasive investigation. That allows assessment of motility disorders in the absense of endoscopic finding
What is manometry?
This is an adjunct to endoscopy and barium swallow. Provides detailed assessment of the lower esophageal sphincter and oesophageal peristalsis. This is of particular importance in achalasia.
