Surface Area : Volume Ratios Flashcards
If an organism is larger what will its surface area to volume ratio be like?
It will be smaller the surface area is compared to its ratio
Why do single celled organisms not need exchange surfaces?
Because substances are able to diffuse directly into the cell through a membrane.
It’s because they have a large surface area : volume ratio so enough substances can be exchanged across the membrane to supply the volume of the cell
Why do multicellular organisms need exchange surfaces?
Because they have a small surface area : volume ratio so not enough substances can diffuse through their outside surface to supply the volume of the cell
How can an exchange surface become more effective?
Having a large surface area
A thin membrane
Having an efficient blood supply
Being ventilated
