Antibiotic resistance Flashcards

1
Q

why can some strains of a bacterial disease be resistant to antibiotics?

A

the overuse of antibiotics reduces their effectivness as the bacteria can randomly mutate to produce new strains that the antibiotics are not specialised to kill

Q

how do some bacteria become antibiotic resistance?

A

a bacteria mutates
the antibiotic kills off the non-resistance bacteria
the resistant bacteria survives and reproduces to form a colony
the infected is still ill

Q

what is MRSA?

A

-It stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
-its a bacteria commonly carried on the skin or nose of healthy people
-its spread among people having close contact with someone infected not through the air
-it is resistant to several antibiotics
-its causing big problems especially in hospitals as people have had operations (cuts) and a weakened immune system
