blood and circulation Flashcards
what are the four main components of blood?
platelets
white blood cells
red blood cells
plasma
what are white blood cells?
white blood cells are cells which kill bacteria and viruses and make antibodies
what are red blood cells?
red blood cells are cells that carry oxygen to tissues all around your body
what is plasma?
plasma is a yellow liquid that transports carbon dioxide urea, food molecules, hormones, platelets, amino acids and all your blood cells
what are platelets?
platelets are fragments of cells that produce a network of protein threads which trap red blood cells and platelets to form a jelly like clot stopping you from bleeding to death and preventing microbes from entering a wound.
what diseases are associated with each part of the blood?
red blood cells- anaemia (low iron so cant make haemoglobin)
white blood cells- leukemia
platelets- haemophillia
state whether each part of the blood does or does not have a nucleus
red blood cells- no nucleus so theres more space to carry oxygen
white blood cells - there is a nucleus but it is large and has a strange shape
platelets- no nucleus
what is most of the blood made up from?
plasma
what is it called when oxygen binds to haemoglobin?
oxihaemoglobin
what are the adaptations of the red blood cell?
biconcave shape to increase surface area
no nucleus so theres more space to carry oxygen
lots of haemoglobin so it can bind to more oxygen
what are the factors that increase pulse rate?
adrenaline, excercising as more oxygen and glucose are needed in the muscle cells due to quicker contractions
