RP: Food Tests Flashcards
what does ethanol, iodine, biurets and benedicts solution test for?
ethanol-lipids
biurets-protein
bendicts-sugars
iodine-starch
how do you carry out a test for starch using iodine solution?
add the iodine solution to the food sample
if it turns blue/black starch is present
how do you test for lipids using ethanol?
add the ethanol to the food sample in a test tube, shake and then add water.
if it turns cloudy/milky then lipids are present
how do you test for sugars using benedicts solution?
you add the benedicts solution to the food sample then heat for two minutes in a warm water bath
it will show sugars are present if it goes brick red meaning theres lots of sugars present or a more greeny yello showing not a lot of sugars are present
how could you test for protein using biurets solution?
add the biurets solution to the food sample
if it turns purple proteins are present
name some hazards and their risks in this experiment
test tube- if it breaks could cut yourself so we used a test tube rack
ethanol-its flammable so we used a water bath to heat the solution instead of a naked flame
