Required diseases Flashcards
what are the six need to know diseases?
-Gonorrhea
-Athlete’s foot
-Malaria
-Measles
-HIV and AIDS
-Salmonella
what type of the pathogen are each of diseases?
-Gonorrhea=Bacteria
-Athlete’s Foot=Fungi
-Malaria=Protist
-Measles=Virus
-HIV and AIDS=Virus
-Salmonella=Bacteria
give some information on measles
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-measles is a virus
-symptoms include, a fever and a red skin rash
-the inhalation of droplets such as coughs and sneezes (very infectious)
-it can be prevented through vaccinations but theres no treatment
-its a serious illness that can be fateful if complications arise
Describe HIV/AIDS
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-HIV or AIDS are a virus
-symptoms can include mild flu like illness
-its transmission is caused by direct sexual contact or exchange of body fluids (e.g. blood) for example when drug users share needles
-it can be prevented by using condoms, not sharing needles, screening blood transfusions and HIV positive mothers bottle feeding babies
-there is no treatment, no vaccinations
unless its succesfully controlled with antiretroviral drugs the virus attacks the bodies immune cells. AIDS occure when the immune system is badly damaged
describe salmonella
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-salmonella is bacterial
-symptoms include fevers, abdonimal cramps, vomiting and diarrhea
-it can be transmitted by eating raw/undercooked animals or unhygenic conditions where food is contaminated
-it can be prevented by cooking meat well and avoiding contamination with surfaces
-can be treated with antibiotics and sometimes a saline drip. Poultry can also be vaccinated against it.
describe athlete’s foot
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-athletet’s foot is a fungi infection
-symptoms are itchy red skin between the toes and on the feet
-transmission is caused by contact with infection e.g. swimming pools, changing rooms or shared footwear
-it can be prevented by the infected using a barrier over the fungal e.g. a sock
-treatments are antifungal drugs
describe gonorrhea
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-gonorrhea is a bacterial disease
-symptoms include thick yellow discharge, pain in the pubic area when urinating (some however dont develop symptoms)
-its transmitted by unprotected sexual contact with an infected person
-the spread can be prevented by reducing the number of sexual partners, using a barrier method of contraception and all infected must get treated
-the treatment is antibiotics
it used to be able to be treated by penicillin but then resistant strains appeared
describe malaria
type of pathogen?…Symptoms?…..Transmission?….how can it be prevented?….how can it be treated?
-malaria is protist
-symptoms can include recurrent episodes of fevers or shaking
-transmission is caused by the protist reproducing inside of mosquitos which act as vectors. The mosquitos feed on human blood allowing the process to pass into the blood stream
-it can be prevented by using insecticides, taking antmalarial drugs that kill any parasites or removing any stagnant and still water
-it can be treated by a combination of drugs
