Scheurmann’s
Increased thoracic kyphosis > 40
Structural changes in vertebrae
3 adjacent vertebrae wedges 5 degrees each
Pain, apex usually T7
Equal M:F
Etiology uncertain
Detection of Scheuermann’s
Identified on x ray
Usually thoracic or thoracolumbar region
Pathological changes - Schmorl’s nodes
Patient anable to actively correct within normal limits
Scheuermann’s Treatment
Initially conservative - exercise, anti inflammatory
Brace- orthotic management shown to be effective in controlling and correcting curvatures
40-50 degrees curve is watched
> 55 degrees=bracing intervention
Bracing shown to be effective up to 80 degrees
