Q

Scheurmann’s

A

Increased thoracic kyphosis > 40

Structural changes in vertebrae

3 adjacent vertebrae wedges 5 degrees each

Pain, apex usually T7

Q

Detection of Scheuermann’s

A

Identified on x ray

Usually thoracic or thoracolumbar region

Pathological changes - Schmorl’s nodes

Patient anable to actively correct within normal limits

15
Q

Scheuermann’s Treatment

A

Initially conservative - exercise, anti inflammatory

Brace- orthotic management shown to be effective in controlling and correcting curvatures

40-50 degrees curve is watched

> 55 degrees=bracing intervention

Bracing shown to be effective up to 80 degrees

16
Q

Orthotic Treatment of Scheuermann’s

A

TLSO with sternal, cervical component

Reduction of compressive forces on anterior growth plate

Strong passive reduction of lumbar lordosis

Active sternal or cervical component

Thoracic extensors forced to excercise

17
Q

3pp Hyperextension brace (Jewett)

A

T7-L2

Sternal pad 1 inch below sternal notch

Lateral pads should sit on illiac crests

Pelvic pad on pubic bone
