Superlearner Course Flashcards
What is the s of SQ3R? (Superlearner)
The s stands for survey, which means to investigate, examine, question and record information.
Pre-reading helps to speed up, priming our brain for reading the text with high retention.
We scan the text in around 5-8 times our normal spead and we check for titles, sub-headings, proper nouns, numbers, numbers or words that just not seem to fit in.
We think of the structure and think if a mental map, we generate thoughts and ideas about the text. The moments of “ah thats interesting” serve as temporary markers that we later make more detailed.
Don’t get hang up on every detail get the hang of the flow.
What does the q for in SQ3R (superlearner)
Adult learners need to be curious about what they’re learning and connext it to their existing knowledge.
Use the pre-reading to inspire within yourself a burning curiosity or interest. Even the most boring text becomes interesting
How apply this?
- Envision yourself using the material
- Start asking questions
- Consider different perspectives
How is the superlearner course learning us to be faster readers with their speed reeding
Most people use ineffective subvocalization and saccades. With speed reading we break the “sound barrier” of normal reading, we also surpress the voice and see words as visual symbols and we distinguish 3 different stages: encodig, storage and retrieval.
How are we going to read differently?
- More efficient encoding (saccades)
- More effective storage
- More deliberate retrieval (stop at the end of page/chapter
How to use saccades? (Superlearner)
Reduce them. Saccades are movements of the eyes which cannot provide the brain with information (saccades masking), this is rather done by the fixations.
Speedreaders only have 2/3 fixations for a normal book and or 4/5 on a full width page.
During pre-reading establish the number of fixations needed.
