Signs of Marijuana use
Impaired motor coordination
Glassy, red eyes
Loud talking, inappropriate laughter followed by sleepiness
Sensation of slowed time
Impaired judgement
Loss of interest and motivation; social withdrawal
Weight gain or loss
Signs of Amphetamine/Cocaine Use
Euphoria; grandiosity
Dilated pupils, dry mouth and nose
Hyperactivity; excessive talking later followed by excessive sleeping at odd times
Later onset of depressive symptoms; low affect
Irritability
Anxiety; confusion; paranoia
May go long periods of time without eating or sleeping
Weight loss
Signs of Opioid/Heroin Use
initial euphoria followed by apathy or dysphoria
Contracted pupils; no response of pupils to light
slurred speech
impairment in attention and memory
Needle marks
Sleeping at unusual times; loss of appetite
Delirium Tremens (DTs)
Symptom associated with alcohol withdrawal
Includes hallucinations, rapid desperation, temperature abnormalities, and body tremors
Methadone
A medication-assisted treatment used to assist clients in detoxing from opiates
Synthetic narcotic substitution for heroin
Antabuse
A medication-assisted treatment for alcohol addiction applying unpleasant symptoms when alcohol is consumed
A form of “aversion therapy”
Naltrexone
Medication-assisted treatment which reduces cravings for alcohol and blocks effects of opioids
Signs of Alcohol Intoxication
Inappropriate sexual or aggressive behaviors
Impaired judgement, attention or memory
Slurred speech; stupor
Emotional Lability (quick changes)
Incoordination; unsteady gait
Involuntary, rhythmic movement of eyes
Signs of Alcohol Withdrawal
sweating
tachycardia (high heart rate)
hand tremor
insomnia
nausea or vomiting
transient illusions or hallucinations
anxiety
pscyhomotor agitation
grand mal seizures
delirium tremors
Wernicke’s Encephalopathy
caused by thiamine deficiency often associated with alcoholism
confusion, loss of muscle coordination (leg tremors), vision changes (abnormal eye movement, double vision, eyelid drooping)
Korsakoff’s Syndrome
associated with alcoholism
amnesia, memory loss, hallucinations
confabulation (attempts to compensate for memory loss by fabricating memories)

fatigue
vivid unpleasant dreams
insomnia or hypersomnia
increased appetite
psychomotor agitation
Signs of Hallucinogen use
perceptual changes
ideas of reference
paranoid ideation

blurred vision; incoordination
tremors
anxiety; depression
Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder
flashbacks following the cessation of use
causes significant distress or impairment of functioning
