Aphasia
Difficulty understanding language or using language to speak or write
Agnosia
Inability to recognize familiar OBJECTS
Prosopagnosia
Inability to recognize familiar faces
Acalculia
Inability to do simple arithmetic
Dysarthria
Slurred speech
Organic Brain Syndrome
Term used to describe physical disorders impair mental function
Common symptoms include confusion, agitation, impairment of memory, judgement and intellectual functioning
Disorders that may cause such injury/damage to the brain include alcoholism, Alzheimer’s, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs), Parkinson’s disease, and stroke
Sciatica
Can include pain along a nerve pathway
Tinnitus
Ringing or other sounds originating in the ears
Delirium
Abrupt and acute; responds to treatment
Altered levels of alertness, consciousness
Impaired and fluctuating orientation, attention and awareness
Motor behavior can be lethargic or hyperactive
Impairment in immediate and recent memory
Thinking is disorganized, distorted, incoherent, slowed or accelerated
Irritable, aggressive, fearful
Stability can vary hour to hour
Dementia
Slow but stable, chronic, deterioration over time
Impaired orientation, judgement, recent and immediate memory
Difficulty with abstract thinking; thoughts impoverished; difficulty finding words
ADLs and iADLs may be intact early on, become impaired as disease progresses
Labeled, apathetic, irritable
Alertness and motor behaviors can vary
Awareness and attention are usually normal and clear
