Behavioral Development Flashcards
Operant Conditioning
B. F. Skinner
Antecedent (initial event) —> Response/Behavior —> Consequence
Operant Techniques
Positive Reinforcement - give something to increase behavior
Negative Reinforcement - increase in behavior by removing aversive (disliked) stimulus
Positive Punishment - present undesirable stimulus to decrease behavior
Negative Punishment - remove desirable stimulus to decrease behavior
Aversion Therapy
Treatment aimed at reducing attractiveness of a stimulus or a behavior by repeated pairing of it with an aversive stimulus
(Ex. Treating alcoholism with Antabuse)
Biofeedback
Behavior training program that teaches a person how to control certain functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and muscular tension
treat ADHD + Anxiety
(Ex. Progressive muscle relaxation; mindful breathing)
Extinction
Withholding a reinforcer that normally follows a behavior
Behavior that fails to produce reinforcement will eventually cease
Flooding
Extinguish anxiety by prolonged real or imagined exposure to high intensity fear stimuli
In vivo desensitization
Pairing and movement through a hierarchy of anxiety from least to most anxiety provoking situations
Takes place in “real” setting
Modeling
Method of demonstrating a behavior to be acquired by client
Rational Emotive Behavior (RET)
Social worker seeks to change a clients irrational beliefs by argument, persuasion, and rational re-evaluation
Teaches client to counter self-defeating thinking
Shaping
Method used to train a new behavior by prompting and reinforcing successive approximations of the desired behavior
(Toddler working to walk step by step - gains closer to goal)
Systematic Desensitization
Anxiety-inhibiting response cannot occur at same time as anxiety response
Anxiety producing stimulus is paired with relaxation-producing response
Time out
Removal from something desirable - negative punishment technique
Token Economy
Receives tokens as reinforcement for desirable behaviors - positive reinforcement
