Study Guide-Plant Growth Flashcards
What do the leaves do?
Absorb sunlight to undergo photosynthesis. They also contain stomata and guard cells.
What do the roots do?
Collect/absorb water and minerals for the plant. Also anchors the plant to the ground.
What does the stem do?
Transports the water and minerals to the leaves and flowers. Connects leaves and roots.
What does the flower do?
Usually bright colors, attracting pollinators in order to move pollen to another plant and be able to reproduce
What does the anther do?
Stores pollen
What does the filament do?
Stalk supporting anther.
What does the stigma do?
Sticky part of the female flower part that collects pollen
What does the ovary do?
The female sex cell in a plant; where fertilization occurs
What does the sepal do?
a protective leaf-like structure
What does the pistil do?
The female part of the flower that contains all three main parts
What does the stamen do?
Contains the anther and the filament.
What does the petal do?
Make up the outside of the flower; usually brightly colored.
What is the xylem?
Bundles of veins that carry water and minerals to the leaves.
What is the phloem?
Vein bundles that carry food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant.
What is transpiration?
The process of the movement of water throughout the plant, including evaporation from the leaves above.
