Mitosis and Cytokinesis Part 2 Flashcards
List all 6 phases of cell life in the order in which they occur:
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis
How do organisms grow and get bigger?
More cells are produced within an organism which causes it to grow larger over time. Also, as more cells are produced, the cells are also able to grow larger over time.
What is the term called that means “colored body.”
Chromosomes
What material(s) form across the cell which will serve as transportation routes for the moving chromosomes during cell division?
-Spindle fibers
What are the the hereditary units called that have the codes to determine your traits or characteristics?
-DNA
What structure holds the two sister chromosomes together during the early phases of cell division?
-Centromeres
Do all organisms on Earth have the same number of chromosomes? If not, do all organisms within the same species have the same amount of chromosomes?
-Not every organism has the same number of chromosomes. However, every organism with a specific species will have the same amount of chromosomes. (ex. Humans)
What are Centrioles?
Structures that develop in animal cells during prophase, which move towards the ends of the cell and act as anchors for the spindle fibers.
___________ is when a nuclear membrane forms around the new set of chromosomes at both ends.
Telophase
____________ is when the cytoplasm is squeezed down or pinched into two nearly equal parts.
Cytokinesis
____________ is when the chromosomes line up in the center of the cell and attach to the splindle.
Metaphase
____________ is when the chromosomes and organelles are duplicated or copied.
Anaphase
____________ is when the nuclear membrane breaks down and spindles begin to form.
Prophase
____________ is when the sister chromosomes separate from each other and move to opposite ends of the cell.
Interphase
Define Mitosis:
The duplication of a nucleus into two nuclei with identical DNA/genetic information.
