Properties of Matter Test Flashcards
What does a phase change diagram look like?
A line graph showing the changes throughout a certain substance.
What are the different phases in a phase change diagram?
When heating: Solid, Melting, Liquid, vaporization, Gas. When cooling: Gas, Condensation, Liquid, Freezing, Solid.
What is the similarity between sublimation and deposition:
Deposition and sublimation are both phase changes between solids and gas.
How does the mass of water change when it goes through a phase change?
It stays the same
What effect does salt have on the boiling and melting points of water?
Makes boiling point increase and melting point decrease
Where will heat transfer from when two objects contact each other? When will this transformation of heat stop?
From hot to cold, when the two objects have equal temp.
Which way does heat travel when ice cubes are placed in warm water?
From the water to the ice cubes.
Define Conduction and provide an example:
Process where heat energy is transmitted through direct contact. Ex. Electrical current when a light is turned on.
What are the formulas for Density, volume, and mass?
D=M/V, M=DV, V=D/M
How do the molecules in a substance change their spacing and movement as it changes from a solid to a liquid to a gas?
Solid: Particles are close together and not moving. Liquid: Particles are moving slightly faster, and are a little further apart. Gas: Particles are spread out and are moving very fast.
Does mass change when a substance undergoes phase change?
No, Mass stays the same
Should the mass of a solution change when you dissolve one thing in another? (i.e. salt in water) If there is a change, what could it be attributed to?
No, it should not change. If there was change, it could be attributed to human error or equipment error.
How did we determine the density of air?
We measured the mass of the beaker before, and then used air pumps in order to pump out as much air from the beaker as possible. Then, we measured the mass of the beaker after, and used volume and mass to calculate the density of the air itself.
How does temperature effect density?
The cooler the temperature, the greater the more dense. The hotter the temperature, the less dense.
What happened when we placed metal in the burner?
It began to bend.
