Eclipses, Tides, etc. Flashcards
What are the three types of eclipses?
Solar, Annular, and lunar
How does a solar eclipse happen?
When the moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun.
What is the darkest part of the moon’s shadow called?
The Umbra
Where must you be to see a total solar eclipse?
In the Umbra
How long does a solar eclipse last?
A few minutes
What is the outer atmosphere of the sun called?
The corona
What is the lighter shadow called
The penumbra
Where must you be to see a partial eclipse?
In the penumbra
Which part of the eclipse is experienced more: A partial or total eclipse. Why?
A partial one, since the penumbra is larger than the umbra.
What happens in an annular eclipse?
The dark disc of the moon is surrounded by a ring of sunlight.
What does annulus mean?
“ring” in latin
What is the outer edge of the sun seen as during an annular eclipse?
Total eclipse/ring
What is a lunar eclipse?
When the Earth comes in between the Moon and the Sun .
What happens to the moon during a Lunar eclipse.
The Moon is in Earth’s shadow
How does a total lunar eclipse occur?
The full moon is in Earth’s umbra
Which part of the Earth sees a lunar eclipse?
The night side
How does the moon appear different colors during a lunar eclipse?
The dust as well as the clouds in the atmosphere
How does a partial lunar eclipse occur?
Part of the moon is within Earth’s umbra.
How does a penumbral lunar eclipse occur?
The moon goes through the shadow of the Earth that is lighter.
Why aren’t eclipses seen simultaneously all over the world?
Since the moon is only about 1/4 the size of the Earth. Therefore, the shadow being cast from it won’t cover the whole Earth; Just a part of it. During a lunar eclipse, only the night side of the Earth can see the Earth’s shadow on the moon.
What half of the moon is always lit up by the sun?
The side that is facing the moon.
How many lunar phases are there and what are they called? (know where they are and how to describe them)
8 lunar phases; New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third/last quarter, and waning crescent.
Why does the moon experience phases?
Depending on the position of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, determines how much sunlight reflects off of the moon.
True or false: The same side of the moon is always seen from Earth.
True
How long does it take for the moon to orbit the Earth?
About 27.3 days.
How long does it take for the moon to go through its phases?
29.5 days
In which two ways can the two eclipses occur?
Total or partial (Be able to identify in a picture and describe them)
How do tides happen?
The gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun against the Earth.
How many high and low tides are there each day?
Two high and two low tides. This is due to the consistent time of moon rise and moon set, as well as the phases of the moon.
Why is there a change between the high and low tides each day?
Due to the moons orbit around the Earth.
Define Neap tide:
Smallest change in height from high tide to low tide. During this, the moon is at a right angle to Earth.
Define Spring tide:
The Greatest change in height from high tide to low tide. The Sun, Earth, and Moon are all lined up.
Define Umbra:
Darkest part of the shadow cast by the moon.
Define Penumbra:
The lighter part of the Moon’s shadow.
How many lunar phases does the moon have?
8
List the different phases of the moon: (Be sure to know what each phase looks like and the order in which they occur)
Third/last quarter, Waning gibbous, waxing gibbous, full moon, new moon, waxing crescent, waning crescent, First quarter.
How long does each phase of the moon last?
About 3-4 days.
How often do tides occur?
Every 12 hours, from high tide to high tide.
How is the moon able to shine at night?
When the sun reflects off of the moon’s surface.
Explain the difference between a waning moon and waxing moon:
A waning moon has increasing darkness, while a waxing moon has increasing light.
When does a spring tide occur?
When the Sun, Earth, and Moon are lined up.
When does a neap tide occur?
During a first or third quarter moon.
What type of moon does there have to be for a spring tide to occur?
full or new moon
