Pure Substances and Mixteres Test Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A substance with the same composition and properties throughout.
What are pure substances made up of?
Elements and compounds
What is an element
Building blocks of matter
What is a compound
2 or more elements chemically combined
Fill in the blank: Individual elements _____ their characteristics in a compound.
Lose
What is the smallest part of a compound?
A molecule
Fill in the blank: Elements _______ (can/can’t) be broken down into simpler substances.
Can’t
What is the smallest part of an element?
An atom
List some examples of elements:
Oxygen, helium, carbon
List some examples of compounds:
Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), water (H20)
What are mixtures made up of?
Heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures
What are the two different things matter can be broken down into?
Pure substances and mixtures.
What are heterogeneous mixtures?
Mixtures in which you can still see the different parts
What are homogeneous mixtures?
Has the same mixture throughout
Give an example of heterogeneous mixtures:
Tossed salad, trail mix
Give an example of a homogenous mixture:
Water with sodium chloride
Define Atom
Basic unit of a chemical element
Define molecules
A group of atoms bonded together (smallest chemical compound)
Define Element
A part of something that is made up of one kind of atom
Give an example of an element
Hydrogen and oxygen can’t be broken down into simpler substances
Define compound
Substance made from more than one element that can be combined chemically.
Give an example of a compound
Salt that has dissolved in water
Define Mixture
Combination of two or more substances that can be taken apart
Give an example of a mixture
Milk and cocoa cola combined
What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?
Mixtures are made up of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. A compound is made up of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined.
