Structure of the skeleton Flashcards
Why do we need the skeletal system
it provides a framework for the muscular system to produce movement
A joint
a place where two or more bones meet
Long bones
Long shaft and are responsible for a lot of movement and often act as levers. This is how sporting actions are created
Flat bones
Protects delicate areas, cranium protects brain. Provides broad surface area for a muscle attachment
Short bones
Light, small and very strong. The primary function is to support the weight of the body.
Irregular bones
Irregular bones are specifically shaped to perform a particular function such as protection and muscle attachment
Why do we need red blood cells
they carry oxygen to the working muscles
Why do we need white blood cells
to fight off infections in order to keep healthy
Blood cell production
The inner marrow of the long bones and ribs produce red and white blood cells
