Respiratory system Flashcards
Respiratory system
Intakes oxygen
released carbon dioxide waste
Nasal cavity
space above and behind the nose
designed to warm , moister and filter the air
Trachea/windpipe
Tubular passage to carry air from the mouth and nose towards the lungs
divides into bronchi
Bronchi
pair of tubes that carry air from trachea to lungs
Bronchioles
tubes extending from the bronchi, carrying air from the bronchi to the alveoli
Alveoli
Around the bronchioles are 600 million alveoli which are tiny air sacks in each lung.
huge surface area for rapid gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
Lungs
Made of elastic tissue to inhale and fill with air
optimised for gas exchange between our blood and the air
Cardiac notch
Area in the left lung to accommodate the heart, hence why the right lung is bigger than the left
External intercostals
contract to pull the rib-cage up when we breathe in
internal intercostals
contract to pull the rib-cage down when we breathe out
Diaphragm
muscle at the bottom of rib-cage
when breathing in, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, making chest cavity larger and drawing air in
