What is a TIA?
A ‘mini stroke’ with no radiological evidence
It can be a warning sign for a full stroke

Age
BP
Clinical features

Diabetes
It’s used to identify people who have had a TIA. The higher the score, the higher the risk of developing another stroke
What is a TIA?
Transient Ischaemic Attack
What is paroxysmal AF?
Episodes that come and go within 48 hours
What is protein S?
A vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein synthesized in the liver
-Has a role in coagulation
What is Protein C?
The activated form plays a role in regulating anticoagulation, inflammation, and cell death and maintaining the permeability of blood vessel walls
What is hemiplagia?
Total paralysis
What is hemiparesis?
Weakness
What is a total anterior circulation stroke?
All 3 modalities are affected
-60% die within a year or are completely dependent after
There is a high risk of haemorrhage
What is a partial stroke?
Affects 2/3 modalities
-20% die within a year
What is a lacunar stroke?
Affects 1/3 modalities
What are the radiological scans that can identify a stroke?
-CT angiogram
-MRI angiogram
-CT in non-specialised units
What is coning of the brain?
Where the brain is forced through a small opening at the base of the skull where it meets the spinal cord
