302 Imaging brain in multiple sclerosis Flashcards
Why is imaging for MS performed?
Early diagnosis
Accurate diagnosis
Monitor response to treatment
In what modality of MS imaging done?
MRI is gold standard
-of brain and spine
CT not very useful
What is a T1 vs T2 MRI?
T1-weighted MRI enhances the signal of the fatty tissue and suppresses the signal of the water
T2-weighted MRI enhances the signal of the water
What are some MS variants
-Tumefactive MS / Balo’s concentric sclerosis
-Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
-Neuromyelitis optica NMO [Devic’s disease]
What is Tumefactive MS?
It has symptoms similar to those of a brain tumor
On MRI scans, the condition appears as tumor-like lesions larger than 2cm
What is Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis(ADEM)?
Brief but widespread attacks of inflammation (swelling) in the brain and spinal cord that damages myelin
What is Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO)?
AKA Devic’s disease
Condition where the immune system damages the spinal cord and the nerves of the eyes (optic nerves)
