302 Histopathology of the GI tract Flashcards
Describe the architecture of the intestine
Outside to inwards
-Serosa
-inner circular and outer longitudinal muscularis layer
-Submucosa
-Mucosa
-Lumen
How does acute colitis occur histologically?
Not server changes because the disease process hasn’t lasted ling enough to cause too much damage
There will be inflammation
what are some differentials for acute collitis?
Acute infection
Drugs
Early stage inflammatory disease
What is the histology of chronic colitis?
-Distortion of architecture
-Hyperplasia of cells
-Ulcer-associated lineage indicating attempt to repair
-Fibrosis
Differentials for chronic colitis
-Inflammatory bowel disease
drugs
-Microscopic colitis
-Diverticular colitis
-Some infections like syphilis and
What are the features of active ulcerative colitis histologically?
-Inflammation in confined to the mucosa
-There will be signs of damage like abscesses and inflammation
How does Crohn’s disease appear histologically?
-Cobble stone appearance
-Has areas of normal bowel (patchy skip lesions)
-Fibrosis
-Affects full thickness of the bowel
-Distortion of architecture
-Active inflammation
-Cryptitis and abscesses
-Granulomas (not present in UC)
What is indeterminate colitis?
When the features histologically overlap that no diagnosis can be made
Relies heavily on history and clinical presentations
