Length of time for PTSD
Longer than 1 month
PTSD more common in males or females?
Females , most commonly from sexual assault. Men are less common but they get it from combat.
Timeline for acute stress disorder
3 days to 1 month. If 1-2 days, not diagnosable.
Timeline for Adjustment disorder
Development of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to identifiable stressor occurring within 3 months of its onset. Once stressor is terminated, symptoms do not persist for more than an additional 6 months.
Sx of ataque de nervios
Emotional upset, shouting uncontrollably, attacks of crying , trembling, aggression, heat rising from chest to the head.
What to do with methadone prior to liver transplant.
Keep the same dose if pt is stable.
Child PTSD stuff
PTSD child rates are 8%
Children with preexisting anxiety disorders are at increased risk to develop PTSD following trauma exposure
Parental emotional response to a child’s traumatic experience predicts the child’s PTSD severity
Factors that make dissociation more likely than psychosis
- sudden shifts in identity states
- reversible amnesia
- evidence of dissociative behavior that predates the clinical or forensic presentation
- high scores on measures of dissociation and hypnotizability.
Hydrocortisone and PTSD
Hydrocortisone is the correct answer because studies show that its use can reduce the severity of symptoms and decrease the risk of developing PTSD.
What is a good method to diagnose PTSD?
The Structured Clinical Interview of DSM-5 Disorders provides reliable diagnostics of PTSD and most other psychiatric conditions
What can be used to augment for PTSD?
Risperidone and other atypicals.
When do symptoms first start? What percent of PTSD sx resolve completely within that time frame?
First 3 months. Complete recovery occurs within 3 months in about one-half of the adults
Within 1 month of PTSD sx, what therapy is good if symptoms are intense?
Trauma-focused CBT. If not intense, you can do wait and watch
What does the PTSD brain look like on imaging?
Reduced anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) volume, reduced hippocampal volume
Which NT is increased in PTSD?
There is an increase in the excretion of the dopamine and its metabolites in the urine of patients with PTSD.
