Stress Flashcards
What part of the brain is in charge of the stress response?
The Hypothalamus ( hormones )
What 2 structures are triggered during stress response?
Pituitary gland ( controls hormones ) Adrenal gland ( releases hormones into bloodstream )
What is a amygdala hijack?
Emotional distress, anger or impulse
What is an allostatic load?
Chronic stress causing wear and tear on the body and brain
1) perceived threat
2) impulses reach amygdala via thalamus
3) ?
4) hypothalamus activates sympathetic NS
5) person reacts inappropriately
3) Amygdala triggers hypothalamus
What does cortisol (glucocorticoid hormone) do in relataiton to stress?
Increases levels of glucose and fatty acids in blood to increase energy to improve our performance to deal with stress
What are cytokines?
Similar to hormones, but produced by immune cells to signal cells and communicate
How does them NErvous system communicate with the immune and endocrine system?
Neurotransmitters
How does the endocrine system communicate with other systems?
Hormones
What does anti inflammatory mean?
Reduces pain
What’s immunosuppressive?
Reduce of efficiency of immune system ( preventing activity )
