Specific Immune Responce Flashcards
Specific immune responses offer what sort of protection on the first time the host meets the antigen?
No protection
What is an antigen?
A substance that stimulates an immune resource and is usually foreign to the host/organism
What is the difference between self and non self?
Self is when the lymphocytes recognise what belongs to the body it exists in, whereas non self is substances such as bacteria, virus, pollen and dirt
2 types of lymphocyte?
B and T
What are the main functions of B lymphocytes?
Produce antibodies
How long do memory cells live?
Long living
Describe the events that occur when a B lymphocyte encounters a specific antigen for the first time?
The antigen bunds to a specific, corresponding antibody on the surface of a B lymphocyte. The B cell divides and differentiates, producing plasma cells and memory cells
What do cytotoxic T cells kill?
Foreign or infected cells
Which cell is not part of the specific immune system?
Natural killer cells
How is immunity acquired once we have been exposed to a particular infection?
Pathogenic bacteria enters the body by evading the first line of defence, inflammatory response returns and the macrophages digest the invading bacteria
Describe the secondary immune response?
This involves memory cells that help mount a quicker and lasting response
