Renal Physiology Flashcards
What’s the function of the kidneys?
Remove urea ( waste product of protein metabolism ) from blood and expel it in urine
What do the ureters do?
Carry urine from kidneys to the bladder
What’s the role of the bladder?
Store urine
What is the role of the urethra?
Allows urine to leave the body
What’s the role of a nephron?
Filtrating and purifying blood
Nephrons have two separate parts, the Renal corpuscle and the Renal ?
Tubule
What’s the role of the Renal tubule?
Reabsorption and secretion
What is the loop of Henley?
U shaped segment of the Renal tubule
What is the bowman capsule?
A cup like sack at the beginning of the nephron which is the first place of filtration of blood to create urine
What is the glomerulus?
Nerve endings around the end of the kidney tubule
Capillaries wind around all tubular parts of the nephron, why?
To allow substances to move into and out of the blood as urine is formed
What are the functions of anti diuretic hormone (ADH)?
Water retention and vasoconstriction (rise in BP)
What best describes the process whereby blood pressure forces water and other dissolved substances from the bloody into the glomerular capsule?
Glomerlar filtration
The functional unit of the kidney produces urine by three main processes which are?
Filtration, reabsorption and secretion
Glucose is not usually found in the urine of a healthy person because?
It should have been fully reabsorbed by the proximal tubule
